Whether you are outside working in your jeans or you throw them on to do your daily errands, your jeans have an expiration date.  Tips to Make Your Jeans Last Longer

At Sheplers Western Wear, we are sharing our secrets on how to make jeans last longer so that when you find that favorite pair that fits just right, you can wear them for a long time to come.

1.     Wash Them Sparingly

If you are washing your jeans after every wear, you are killing that pair of pants. With each wash the denim gets more worn out. Try to wash your jeans as few times as possible in order to make them last. Some experts recommend only washing them once a month, but other people will say ever longer than that.1 Of course, if you are out in the field and your jeans get all muddy, then yes, you should wash them, but avoid doing this on a regular basis. If you get just a small stain, consider hand washing just that area.

2.     Take Care When You Do Wash Them

Just like cleaning your Stetson cowboy hat or washing a load of delicates, jeans shouldn’t just be carelessly thrown in the washer. In order to make jeans last, they should be turned inside out and washed in cold water. Doing both of these will help keep the color from fading. You also only need to use a small amount of detergent, and do not use bleach or fabric softener.

3.     Let Them Air Dry

Do not put your jeans in the dryer. Doing so can damage the material and cause them to lose their shape. Let them air dry instead to avoid this rough heat and keep them lasting longer.

4.     Hang Your Jeans

Instead of throwing them on the floor next to your Cody James cowboy boots or folding them like a t-shirt and stacking them, hang your jeans by the loops instead. You avoid creating creases in places where there should not be a crease. Your jeans should also keep their shape better and for longer.

If you follow these four tips to make your jeans last longer, you should be able to show off your favorite denim pair for a long time to come. But, eventually your jeans will meet their end and when that happens, our western style clothing store can help you restock your closet.

Keep Your Jeans from Fading with These Tips

Shepler's Blue Jeans

Jeans tend to fade in the washing machine. The soap, water, agitation, and more can discolor them or simply cause them to erode the dye and fade away. However, carefully taking care of your jeans will give them a long-lasting life. Follow the tips below from Sheplers, your one stop shop for all western style clothes, to keep your jeans from fading.

  1. Wash your jeans infrequently. If you’re casually wearing your jeans, you can wash dark ones every 3-4 wears, which will allow them to last considerably longer. If you prefer to wash your jeans after every wear, here’s something to consider: the fabric used to create a pair of jeans is thicker than other types of clothing, and as humans, we tend to sweat less from the lower part of our bodies. If you don’t like the idea of washing your jeans after wearing them three times, you can wash them every other wear.
  2. Turn them inside out. When you do wash your jeans, turn them inside out so the dark fabric isn’t in direct contact with the soap and water. Jeans that are washed inside out will maintain their color better than jeans washed regularly.
  3. Wash your jeans in cold water. Hot water can not only fade your jeans, but can also wear the threads out far more quickly than cold water does.
  4. Hang your jeans outside. Your dryer can make your jeans shrink, and can also lead to unnecessary wear and tear. The fresh outside air makes a great dryer to keep your jeans from fading. However, make sure your jeans aren’t in direct sunlight, because then hanging them outside to dry to keep them from fading can damage just as much as your dryer may!
  5. Wash your jeans with other dark garments. Jeans tend to fade less when they’re washed with other dark clothing. Keep your darks with darks.

The five suggestions above are enough to begin maintaining your beloved pair of blue jeans. If you’ve just about outworn your favorite pair, visit Sheplers, where you can find western style clothes and a brand new pair of favorite jeans.

How to Distress Your Jeans

Girls cowgirl jeans

Purchasing distressed jeans from a store can be pricey, and the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans can be impossible (without Sheplers western store online, of course). But, what if we told you that you can distress your jeans in a few easy steps? Well you heard it here first – you can distress your jeans right at home!

What You’ll Need

  • A pair of jeans
  • A sharp pair of scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Sandpaper
  • Razor
  • Pencil or chalk
  • Washing machine & dryer

How to Distress Your Jeans

  1. Put the jeans on so you can have an idea of the areas in which you wish to distress. Use the pencil or chalk to make a mark around the areas.
  2. Use the sandpaper over those areas for a soft and extra worn out look. You can skip this step if you wish to create minimally distressed jeans.
  3. Use the scissors to cut straight, horizonal slits over the areas you wish to distress. The slits should be ½ an inch to ¾ of an inch from each other.
  4. There are synthetic threads called indigo threads – you’ll know them when you see them. Use the tweezers to pull the indigo threats, but only in the areas you’ve cut (it’s okay if you don’t get them all).
  5. Use the razor to fray the pockets and other edges you want to fray by moving the razor back and forth on the edge.
  6. After cutting all the areas you want to cut and have pulled out most of the indigo threads, put your jeans in the washer, on the cold water setting, to create organic-looking frays.
  7. Once they’re washed put them in the dryer to further natural distressing!

Your First Rodeo: What to Wear When It Comes to Western Wear

Is it your first rodeo? Break out your boots and saddle up. Putting together a comfortable outfit is no sweat with the help of Sheplers. We have compiled a western wear guide for you to follow when getting ready for your first rodeo.

Jeans
Rodeos are timely and often outdoors. The temperature can get hot during the warmer months of the year, so opt for jean shorts instead of jean pants. A pair of boot-cut jeans are a popular choice amongst women who attend rodeos.

Tops
Long sleeve tops are essential, you cannot go wrong with an all-time classic. Roll up the sleeves for a more casual look or keep them long for a traditional rodeo look. If it is still too hot to wear a long sleeve, opt for a light-weight, cotton V-neck or a short sleeved button down.

Cowboy Boots
Cowboy boots are an essential part of western wear at your first rodeo. There is no better place to wear the perfect pair of cowboy boots than at a rodeo. Cowboy boots are a great staple to your outfit, as well as practical for treading through the dusty dirt in the arena. You will feel right at home in a pair of cowboy boots from Sheplers.

Turquoise
For the cowboys, that turquoise bolo tie is calling your name. For all of the cowgirls, turquoise accessories like necklaces and rings make for the perfect pop of color in your western wear. If you are adding key pieces to your outfit, make sure to keep the rest of it pretty simple.

Belt Buckle
There will be belt buckles of all shapes and sizes at your first rodeo. A big, silver belt buckle is another great piece for your western wear. Make sure your belt is made from real leather to get the most authentic look.

Why You Should Only Wash Your Jeans from Sheplers Once a Year

Did you know that you may be accidentally ruining your favorite pair of jeans from Sheplers?

While you most certainly may not be meaning to do so, by throwing your jeans in the washing machine every time after you wear them, you are destroying their shape and color. Denim expert Chip Bergh, CEO of Levi Strauss & Co., says of his own jeans, “these jeans are maybe a year old and these have yet to see a washing machine.”

Shep Jeans

Bergh goes onto say that “if you talk to real denim aficionados, they tell you don’t wash your blue jeans.”

But if you can’t wash your jeans from Sheplers, then how are you supposed to keep them clean? Here are some alternative ways to make sure your jeans stay fresh from the Levi’s master himself:

  • Eliminate odor by spritzing jeans with white vinegar or vodka and then hanging them out to dry.
  • Freeze your jeans once a month to kill off the smell caused by bacteria.
  • Turn your jeans inside out and then freeze them for two days at a time.
