How Justin Boots Began

As an avid maker of his very own cowboy boots, H.J. Justin started what is now famously known today in a small town in Texas. Justin Boots are full of decorative stitching, ultimately meant to stiffen the leather to prevent from folding around the ankles. Sheplers is here to share some information on the origin of Justin Boots so you know exactly where your cowboy boots came from!

As stated prior, H.J. Justin liked to make his own cowboy boots, and he did just that with the help of a small loan. After a marriage and some time, the Justin family moved to Nocona, Texas for a greater business opportunity. As their children began to age, they became able to help with the little family business, which was called H.J. Justin & Sons, Inc. Less than 50 years later, annual sales skyrocketed and the original owner’s grandson bought the company’s stock, gaining control of H.J. Justin & Sons, Inc. He proceeded to change the name to Justin Industries, Inc.

Bringing such great success, Nocona Boot Company and the Chippewa Shoe Company both hopped on board with Justin Industries. About ten years later, Justin purchased their greatest competitor, Tony Lama boots.

Today, Justin Boots is known for their dependable cowboy boots made from quality material. They provide durability and comfortability, whether you are spending a night at the rodeo or a day on the farm. You can get your very own pair of Justin Boots right here at Sheplers‘ online western wear.

How Cowboy Boots Are Made in the USA

Texas is the center for the manufacturing of cowboy boots. Many businesses, such as Justin Industries, started small and have grown exponentially due to such great success. There are a couple of different ways to make cowboy boots, but many cowboy boot work is done by hand or fully automated factories. Either way cowboy boots are made, Sheplers is here to share the basics in the steps it takes to complete a shoe.

Although there are different types of leather, cowboy boots are mostly made with calfskin because it is easy to work with and very durable.

To begin the process of how cowboy boots are made, you start with cutting the pieces of leather. If you are unfamiliar with the anatomy of cowboy boots, the top of the boot has three parts: the vamp, the counter, and the uppers. The lining for these pieces needs to be cut out as well, and glued into place for durability and strength.

Before the construction of the boot, there needs to be a stitched decoration. In smaller shops, the stitching design is sketched and turned into a stencil, laid on each piece, then sprinkled with a marking agent for someone working a sewing machine. Factories use computers with programmed designs to stitch these designs. Any other colors for the boot are also died during this time.

When it is time to put the boot together, the vamp gets sewn to the upper and the counter is sewn to the very back of the upper so it covers the heel. Any excess leather needs to be trimmed to produce the perfect shape. All of the seams are made on the inside, so the boot is constructed from the inside out. The leather then needs to be soaked in water to become flexible enough to turn inside out.

The next step in how cowboy boots are made deals with the insole. The insole is attached to the vamp and the counter. First gets tacked to something called the last, which is the model shape of the foot. Then vamp and counter are nailed right into the last, beginning at the very front, then around the sides and finishing in the back near the heel.

Now is where the sole comes in. A piece of metal is attached to the insole to make an arch and held by a piece of leather. The sole is then shaped to fit that insole. Then the heel gets nailed on and both pieces are shaped by a sanding process.

When cowboy boots are made with quality, there is an extensive process to finish the entire boot. Fine adjustments need to be made to make sure that everything is perfect. Small seams and other pieces of loose stitching need to be made shapely and trimmed down if not up to manufacturing standards. At this point in the process, final dyes are applied to the leather. The boot is then polished, matched with its pair, and then they are ready to be worn on your feet!

Picking Up and Taking Care of Shark Skin Boots

shark-skin-bootsWhen picking out a good pair of boots, it is good for you to know some things about cowboy boots to aid you in making your decision. You need to be looking for consistency in pattern and also how the leather on the boot will wear over time, especially when it comes to shark skin boots. It is important to know about the different toe types as well. Sheplers has some information on shark skin boots, how to make sure you are getting yourself the perfect pair, and how to keep them as wonderful as when you first picked them up.

Boots made from sea creatures like sharks, eels, and stingrays tend to be durable, but they are made from thinner skin than other types of leathers, such as a cow or alligator. Thus, the skin of the sea creature is sewn onto a very thin layer of the stronger cow leather. Shark skin boots are also sensitive, and should be treated like snakeskin boots. Sheplers highly suggests never getting them wet and do not apply any type of wax polish to them.

Shark skin boots are not always easy to find; however, when the leather is available, these types of boots are one of the most popular selections for cowboys all over the world. Although this skin is different from the others that cowboy boots are made of, they can take to a beautiful shine. It is important to maintain your boots. As Sheplers has stated prior, you should never apply wax to them. This skin requires leather conditioner to help keep your boots soft and prevent them from cracking over time.
